Anthony Striplen is a photographer and musician. Originally from California’s dusty southern San Joaquin Valley, now having lived most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, Anthony’s photography is influenced by a fusion of beautiful juxtapositions.

Anthony’s pictures have been greatly motivated by music while performing as a clarinetist with San Francisco Opera and through the imagination and discipline of his musical colleagues.

Anthony’s photos have appeared in LENSCRATCH, a photography journal.

Artist’s Statement

As an artist I like finding beauty in what we do, and where we are. I try to stay open to seeing what is around us - the moments and objects that are sometimes hidden in plain sight. The surprise of life as a daily improvisation, no matter how well planned, is my opportunity to explore humor, empathy, compassion, and the odd juxtaposition. Isolating in these moments in a photograph is a chance to tell an unexpected story. I’m influenced by the old masters of Dutch painting, desert landscapes of California and the southwest United States, and the Jazz eras from the 1920’s to the early 1960’s. I want to create photographs that evoke a sense of spontaneity, playfulness, and simple beauty.
